गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णु
गुरुर्देवो महेश्वर :
गुरु साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म
तस्मै श्री गुरवे नम : ।
गुरु शब्द का सही अर्थ है वो जो अंधेरे को मिटाये । ये दो शब्दों से बना एक शब्द है । 'गु' याने की अन्धेरा और 'रु' मतलब हटाने वाला । अर्थात अंधेरे को हटाने वाला हमारा गुरु है । हमें अपने गुरु में त्रिमूर्ति का आकार दिखाई देता है । जो तीन भगवानों का स्वरूप है । ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और शिव । हमारे लिए हमारा गुरु भगवान ब्रह्म का आकार है । जो हमें विद्या रूपी प्रसाद देता है । हमारा गुरु विष्णु का स्वरूप भी है । वह हमें बनाई गई चीज़ों को सुरक्षित रखने का ग्यान और तरीका प्रदान करता है । गुरु शिव का रूप भी है । वह हमें बुराई को हटाने का तरीका और उपाय प्रदान करता है । गुरु हमें अग्यान हटाने के लिए विभिन्न प्रकार के रास्ते दिखाता है । इसलिए हमारा गुरु हमारे लिए वो अपार शक्ति है जो बुराई और अच्छाई, गलत और सही, इन सभी चीज़ें का संपूर्ण ग्यान देने का केन्द्र है । ऐसे गुरुजनों को शिष्य अपने तन मन से पूजनीय मानते हुए अपने श्रद्धा अर्पित करते हैं ।
The true meaning of the word Guru is that which eradicates the darkness. It is a word made up of two words. 'Gu' means darkness and 'Ru' means remover. That is, our Guru is the one to remove darkness. We see the shape of the trinity in our guru. Which is the form of three Gods. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. For us our guru is the size of Lord Brahma. Who gives us offerings in the form of learning. Our Guru is also a form of Vishnu. He gives us the knowledge and way to preserve the things made. There is also the form of Guru Shiva. He gives us the way and the remedy to remove evil. The guru shows us different types of avenues for removing agyan. Therefore our Guru is the immense power for us which is the center of giving complete awareness of all these things, both evil and good, wrong and right. The disciples pay reverence to such gurus by considering them as worshipers with their whole body.

गुरु वशिष्ठ राजा दशरथ के पुत्र राम , लक्ष्मण भरत व शत्रुघ्न के गुरु रहे तथा बाल्य काल से ही गुरु वशिष्ठ की ज्ञान गंगा के सरोवर मेँ नित्य स्नान करके धीर , वीर तथा तेजस्वी बने | महर्षि वशिष्ठ ब्रह्माजी के मानस पुत्र थे इनकी पत्नी का नाम अरुंधति था ब्रह्मा जी के कहने पर वह सूर्यवंश के राजपुरोहित बने | गुरु विशिष्ट के मार्गदर्शन अनुसार ही भागीरथ जी गंगा जी को स्वर्ग से धरती पर ले कर आये तथा धरती का उद्धार हो सका | राजा दशरथ को भी पुत्र ना होने पर चिंतित देख पुत्र्येष्टि यज्ञ के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया और तब उनके चार पुत्र - राम, लक्ष्मण, भरत तथा शत्रुघ्न हुए और चारों बहुत ही प्रतापी हुए|

जब समुद्र मंथन हुआ तब कामधेनु माता प्रकट होने पर योग्य व्यक्ति को तलाशा गया और ब्रह्मा जी के कथनानुसार कामधेनु गऊ माता को देवताओं ने गुरु वशिष्ठ को प्रदान किया | माता कामधेनु अपने नाम अनुसार सभी इच्छाओं को पूर्ण करने वाली गाय हैं | कालांतर मैं कामधेनु स्वर्ग मैं चली गयी किन्तु नंदिनी नामक बछड़ी गुरु वशिष्ठ के आश्रम मे दे गयीं जो उन्ही के समान दिव्या थी | एक बार गुरु विश्वामित्र जब क्षत्रिय राजा कौशिक के नाम से जाने जाते थे तब अपनी सेना सहित गुरु वशिष्ठ के आश्रम में आए | उन्हें जब पता चला कि गुरु वशिष्ठ के पास कामधेनु माता की बछड़ी नंदिनी हैं जिन्होंने उनकी पूरी सेना की इच्छा अनुसार पल भर मैं भोजन का प्रबंध कर दिया , तो उन से रहा ना गया और गुरु वशिष्ट से गौ माता को मांगने लगे | गुरु वशिष्ठ के मना करने पर आश्रम पर उन्होंने अपनी सेना के साथ आक्रमण कर दिया, किंतु नंदिनी माता के चमत्कार के कारण उनके सारे दिव्यास्त्र विफल हो गए | तब वह घोर तपस्या के लिए चले गए और ब्रह्म ऋषि विश्वामित्र बन गए | गुरु वशिष्ठ ने उन्हें क्षमा कर दिया तो उन्होंने भी नंदिनी माता को पाने की कामना भी त्याग दी |

On the refusal of Guru Vashisht, he attacked the ashram with his army, but due to the miracle of Nandini Mata, all his divisions failed. Then he went to extreme austerities and became a Brahmin sage Vishwamitra. When Guru Vashistha forgave him, he also gave up the desire to get Nandini Mata.

गुरु वशिष्ट शांत स्वभाव के परमगुरु तथा वेदों के ज्ञाता थे और रघुवंशियों के राजपुरोहित भी इसीलिए बने | गुरु वशिष्ट अपनी विशेषताओं के कारण ही अयोध्या में हुई राजनीतिक तथा पारिवारिक उथल-पुथल को नियंत्रित कर पाए| हालाँकि एक समय तो रघुकुल में भरत और राम के प्रेम को देखकर उनका मन भी विचलित हो गया जब भरत जी वन में प्रभु राम को लेने गए लेकिन दोनों के अपने अपने तर्क और धर्म परिपूर्ण बातों का निष्कर्ष नहीं निकल पा रहा था तब उन्होंने बहुत ही विनम्रता पूर्वक परिस्थितिवश राजा जनक को ही कोई निर्णय लेने का परामर्श दिया ,जिन्हें राम तथा भरत पिता तुल्य मानते थे |

गुरु वशिष्ट ने कभी भी अयोध्या में राजपुरोहित के रूप में ऐसा कार्य नहीं होने दिया जिससे कि विधाता के बनाए हुए विधान में व्यवधान न हो और स्थिति को नियंत्रित करने में अपना भरपूर योगदान दिया | गुरु वशिष्ट के उत्तम ज्ञान के कारण ही आज हम रघुकुल की कीर्ति का गुणगान करते हैं और करते रहेंगे |
Guru Vashishtha never allowed such acts as Rajpurohit in Ayodhya so that the legislation created by the Creator would not be disturbed and he made his full contribution in controlling the situation. गुरु वशिष्ट तथा गुरु विश्वामित्र के विषय में एक और बहुत ही रोचक प्रसंग है:- एक बार दोनों ही महान ऋषियों में एक बहस छिड़ गई की तपस्या श्रेष्ठ है या सत्संग | गुरु वशिष्ठ के अनुसार सत्संग तपस्या से अधिक महान हैं , किंतु विश्वामित्र ऐसा नहीं मानते थे उन्होने वर्षों तक तपस्या की थी तथा उसी को सर्वश्रेष्ठ मानते थे | इसी तर्क वितर्क में दोनों अपनी समस्या को लेकर भगवान शेषनाग के पास गए| शेषनाग भगवान मुस्कुरा दिए और उन्होंने कहा कि यह तो बहुत ही विकट समस्या है और इसको समझाने के लिए मुझे थोड़ा सोचना पड़ेगा | शेषनाग भगवान ने कहा लेकिन मैं तो पृथ्वी का भार अपने ऊपर लिए खड़ा हूं मुझको थोड़ा सा समय दीजिए तो यह भार हटे तो मैं कुछ सोच हूं | तब विश्वामित्र ने कहा कि मैंने 10000 वर्ष तक घोर तपस्या की है मैं इस पृथ्वी को अपने कंधों पर उठा लेता हूं तब तक आप विचार कर लीजिए | गुरु विश्वामित्र ने जैसे ही पृथ्वी को अपने कांधे पर लिया वह क्षण भर भी उसको संभालना पाए और पृथ्वी डगमगाने लगी, तब गुरु वशिष्ठ आगे आए और उन्होंने कहा मैं अपने सत्संग के क्षण भर के प्रभाव से इस स्थिति को संभाल सकता हूं और गुरु वशिष्ठ ने पृथ्वी को अपने कांधे पर बहुत देर तक उठाए रखा| तब शेषनाथ जी वापस आए तो उन्होंने पृथ्वी को अपने ऊपर उठा लिया तब विश्वामित्र जी ने पूछा कि आप का क्या उत्तर है हमारे तर्क वितर्क को शांत करवाइये , शेषनाग जी मुस्कुरा दिए और बोले गुरु विश्वामित्र आप अभी भी नहीं समझे कि सत्संग ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ है तभी तो गुरु वशिष्ठ पृथ्वी का भार अपने ऊपर संभाल पाए |

So Guru Vasishtha could handle the weight of the earth.
