कुंभकरण (Kumbhkarna)

कुम्भकर्ण

कुम्भकर्ण ऋषि व्रिश्रवा और राक्षसी कैकसी का पुत्र तथा लंका के राजा रावण का छोटा भाई था। कुम्भ अर्थात घड़ा और कर्ण अर्थात कान, बचपन से ही बड़े कान होने के कारण इसका नाम कुम्भकर्ण रखा गया था। यह विभीषण और शूर्पनखा का बड़ा भाई था। बचपन से ही इसके अंदर बहुत बल था, तथा खाता इतना था  कि एक बार में यह जितना भोजन करता था उतना कई नगरों के प्राणी मिलकर भी नहीं कर सकते थे। कुम्भकर्ण अपनी निद्रा और अत्‍यधिक भोजन करने की प्रवृत्ति के लिए जाना जाता था| रामायण के अनुसार कुंभकरण भले ही दैत्‍य था, लेकिन वह बेहद बुद्धिमान, बहादुर धर्मज्ञाता , बलवान और निष्‍ठावान था. यही वजह है कि देवताओं के राजा इंद्र को  भी उसकी शक्तियों से डर लगता था | खर, दूषण, कुम्भिनी, अहिरावण और कुबेर कुंभकरण के सौतेले भाई थे।कुंभकर्ण की पत्नी वरोचन की कन्या वज्रज्वाला थीं। उसकी एक दूसरी पत्नी का नाम कर्कटी था। कुंभपुर के महोदर नामक राजा की कन्या तडित्माला से भी कुंभकर्ण का विवाह हुआ। कुंभकर्ण के एक पुत्र का नाम मूलकासुर था जिसका वध माता सीता ने किया था। दूसरे का नाम भीम था। कहते हैं कि इस भीम के कारण ही भीमाशंकर नामक ज्योतिर्लिंग की स्थापना हुई थी।

 
Kumbhakarna was the son of sage Vrishrava and the demonic Kaikasi and younger brother of Ravana, the king of Lanka. Kumbh means pitcher and Karna means ear, it was named Kumbhakarna due to having large ears since childhood. He was the elder brother of Vibhishan and Shurpanakha. Since childhood, there was a lot of force inside it, and the food was so much that even the food of many cities could not do it together in one meal. Kumbhakarna was known for his sleep and tendency to overeat. According to the Ramayana, Kumbhakaran was a monster, but he was very intelligent, brave theologian, strong and loyal. This is the reason why Indra, the king of the gods, was afraid of his powers. Khar, Dushan, Kumbhini, Ahiravana and Kubera were the half brothers of Kumbhakaran. Kumbhakarna's wife was Vajrajwala, the daughter of Varochan. His second wife's name was Kirkati. Kumbhakarna was also married to Taditmala, the daughter of a king named Mahodar of Kumbhapur. Kumbhakarna had a son named Moolakasura who was slaughtered by Mother Sita. The other name was Bhima. It is said that it was due to this Bhima that a Jyotirlinga named Bhimashankar was established.
 

 अपने भाइयों रावण और विभिषण के साथ कुंभकरण ने ब्रह्मा को प्रसन्न करने के लिए कठोर तपस्‍या की थी. इन्द्र आदि देवताओं ने ब्रह्मा तथा शंकर जी से विनती की इन राक्षसों को सोच विचार कर ही वरदान दें | इसके बाद शिव जी ने और ब्रह्मा जी ने विशालकाय कुम्भकर्ण को देखकर सोचा कि यह अगर रोज भोजन करेगा तो पृथ्वी को नाश हो जायेगा।  तपस्‍या से प्रसन्न होकर जब ब्रह्माजी ने उससे वर मांगने के लिए कहा तभी मां सरस्‍वती उसकी जिह्वा पर जाकर बैठ गईं|  फिर क्‍या था उसे मांगना तो था 'इंद्रासन' लेकिन देवी सरस्‍वती के बैठे होने के कारण वह 'निद्रासन' मांग बैठा|

Kumbhakaran, along with his brothers Ravana and Vibhishana, did hard penance to please Brahma. The Gods of Indra and others pleaded with Brahma and Shankar ji to give blessings to these demons only after thinking. After this, Lord Shiva and Brahma Ji, seeing the giant Kumbhakarna, thought that if it would eat every day, the earth would be destroyed. Pleased with penance, when Lord Brahma asked him to ask for a bride, then mother Saraswati sat on his tongue. Then what was it that he had to ask for 'Indrasana' but due to the sitting of Goddess Saraswati, he sat asking for 'sleepless'.

ब्रह्मा के वरदान से कुंभकरण छह-छह महीने सोता रहता था| छह महीने लगातार सोने के बाद जब वह उठता था तो उसे इतनी ज्‍यादा भूख लगी रहती थी कि उसके सामने जो कुछ भी आता था वो उसे खा जाता था, चाहे वो इंसान ही क्‍यों न हों|

जब रावण युद्ध के मैदान में गया तब उसे श्री राम और उनकी सेना के सामने शर्मिंदा होना पड़ा. तब रावण ने फैसला किया कि मुश्किल की इस घड़ी में उसे अपने भाई कुंभकरण का साथ चाहिए. लेकिन उस वक्‍त कुंभकरण सो रहा था. उसे नींद के बीच से उठाना इतना आसान नहीं था. उसे उठाने के लिए अनेक तरह के यत्‍न किए गए. लेकिन वह तब भी नहीं उठा. आखिरकार उसके ऊपर एक हजार हाथी चलवाए गए
विभन्न प्रक्रार के व्यंजन , मदिरा तथा भैंसे उसके पास लाकर रख दिए गए | भोजन की सुंगंध से वह उठा और उठते ही अनेक भैसे सैकड़ो घड़े , मदिरा और वयंजनो को खा गया | उसके बाद क्रोधित हुआ की उसको समय से पहले क्यों जगाया गया | 

कुंभकरण को जब राम-रावण युद्ध के बारे में पता चला तब उसने अपने भाई को समझाने की बहुत कोशिश की. उसने रावण को बताया कि श्री राम साक्षात् नारायण के अवतार हैं और ऐसे में उनसे युद्ध में नहीं जीता जा सकता. वहीं, सीता मां लक्ष्‍मी का रूप हैं इसलिए उनका हरण करने का विचार भी मन में कैसे आ सकता है. कुंभकरण ने रावण को बताया कि वह गलत कर रहा है और उसे अपना हठ  छोड़कर सीता को श्रीराम के पास वापस भेज देना चाहिए. रावण ने कुंभकरण की एक न सुनी. रावण ने कुंभकरण को बताया कि वह उसका भाई है ऐसे में उसका धर्म उसकी तरफ से युद्ध के मैदान में जाना है. यह जानते हुए भी रावण गलत है इसके बावजूद कुंभकरण ने उसकी बात मानी और वह अपने भाई के प्रति निष्‍ठा का पालन करते हुए युद्ध लड़ने चला गया. 

Kumbhakaran used to sleep for six months with the blessings of Brahma. When he woke up after sleeping for six months continuously, he used to get so hungry that whatever he came in front of him would eat him, even if he was a human being. When Ravana went to the battlefield, he had to be embarrassed in front of Shri Ram and his army. Then Ravana decided that in this hour of difficulty he should support his brother Kumbhakaran. But Kumbhakaran was sleeping at that time. It was not so easy to lift him from the middle of sleep. Various efforts were made to lift it. But he still did not get up. Eventually a thousand elephants were carried over him Various types of dishes, wines and buffaloes were brought to him. He woke up from the smell of food and as soon as he got up he ate hundreds of buffaloes, wines and dishes. After that he was angry as to why he was awakened ahead of time. When Kumbakaran came to know about the Ram-Ravana war, he tried a lot to convince his brother. He told Ravana that Shri Rama is the incarnation of Sakshat Narayan and in such a situation he cannot be won in battle. At the same time, Sita is the form of Maa Lakshmi, so how can the idea of ​​killing her come to mind. Kumbhakaran tells Ravana that he is doing wrong and that he should leave his stubbornness and send Sita back to Shri Ram. Ravana did not listen to Kumbhakaran. Ravana told Kumbhakaran that he is his brother, so his religion has to go to the battlefield on his behalf. Despite knowing that Ravana is wrong, Kumbhakaran obeyed him and he went to fight the war, following his loyalty to his brother.
 

कुंभकरण ने रण क्षेत्र में पहुंचकर श्री राम की वानर सेना को कुचल दिया, श्री हनुमान को चोटिल कर दिया और सुग्रीव को मूर्छित कर उसे बंदी बना लिया. जब वह सुग्रीव को ले जा रहा था तभी श्री राम ने उसका वध कर दिया. रामायण के अनुसार कुंभकरण के दो बेटे कुंभ और निकुंभ थे. उसके बेटों ने राम के खिलाफ युद्ध लड़ा और वे भी मारे गए. 

Kumbhakaran reached the battlefield and crushed Shree Rama's monkey army, injured Shree Hanuman and imprisoned Sugriva. While he was taking Sugriva, Shri Ram killed him. According to Ramayana, Kumbhakaran had two sons, Kumbha and Nikumbh. His sons fought a war against Rama and were also killed.

वैसे रामायण के ज्‍यादातर चरित्र ऐसे हैं जो या तो अच्‍छाई के साथ हैं या बुराई के पक्ष में खड़े दिखाई देते हैं. लेकिन कुंभकरण का चरित्र अधिक जटिल है|  वह नीति-अनीति, धर्म-अधर्म का भेद जानता है|  वह कभी खुलकर रावण का विरोध नहीं करता, हालांकि वह रावण को समय-समय पर बहुत समझाता है.| यह जानते हुए भी कि रावण गलत है तब भी वह उसका साथ देता है|  रण क्षेत्र में जब कुंभकरण और विभिषण का आमना-सामना होता है तब दोनों बेहद भावुक हो उठते हैं|  विभिषण अपने बड़े भाई कुंभकरण को अधर्म का साथ छोड़कर श्री राम की शरण लेने के लिए कहता है|  कुंभकरण उसकी अवहेलना करते हुए उसे ही यह कहते हुए अधर्मी बता देता है कि उसने अपने भाई को धोखा दिया है|  जब दोनों भाई एक-दूसरे को नहीं समझा पाते और विदा लेते हैं तब कुंभकरण की आंखों से आंसू बहने लगते हैं| 

 इतना ही नहीं कुंभकरण को यह भी पता था कि युद्ध का क्‍या परिणाम होगा| अपने भाई विभिषण से अंत में वह यही कहता है कि उनके मरने के बाद पूरे विधि-विधान से रावण और उसका अंतिम संस्‍कार करे|  कुंभकरण कहता है कि इस युद्ध में विभिषण ही जिंदा बचेगा, जबकि रावण और उसकी मौत हो जाएगी. विभीषण को ही सबका अंतिम संस्कार करना होगा | 

 

By the way, most of the characters of Ramayana are those who are either with good or appear to be in favor of evil. But the character of Aquarius is more complex. He knows the difference between ethics, immorality, religion and unrighteousness. He never openly opposes Ravana, although he explains Ravana a lot from time to time. Even after knowing that Ravana is wrong, he still supports him. When Kumbhkaran and Vibhishan are confronted in the battle field, both of them get very emotional. Vibhishan asks his elder brother Kumbhakaran to take refuge with Shree Rama and take shelter. Kumbhakaran disregards him and tells him to be unrighteous, saying that he has cheated his brother. When both brothers are unable to explain to each other and leave, then tears start flowing from the eyes of Aquarius. Not only this, Kumbhkaran also knew what the outcome of the war would be. In the end he says to his brother Vibhishan that after his death, Ravana and his last cremation should be done with complete law. Kumbhakaran says that in this war, Vibhishan will remain alive, while Ravana and his death will die. Vibhishan will have to perform the last rites of all.
