पद्मपुराण में वर्णित एक कथा के अनुसार देवराज इन्द्र स्वर्गलोक में अप्सराओं से घिरे रहने के बाद भी कामवासना से घिरे रहते थे। एक दिन वो धरती पर विचरण कर रहे थे। तभी उन्होंने देखा कि एक कुटिया के बाहर गौतम ऋषि की पत्नी देवी अहिल्या दैनिक कार्यों में व्यस्त हैं। अहिल्या इतनी सुंदर और रूपवती थी कि इन्द्र उन्हें देखकर मोहित हो गए। इस तरह इन्द्र रोजाना देवी अहिल्या को देखने के लिए कुटिया के बाहर आने लगे। धीरे-धीरे उन्हें गौतम ऋषि की दिनचर्या के बारे में पता चलने लगा। इन्द्र को अहिल्या के रूप को पाने की एक युक्ति सूझी। उन्होंने सुबह गौतम ऋषि के वेश में आकर अहिल्या के साथ कामक्रीडा करने की योजना बनाई क्योंकि सूर्य उदय होने से पूर्व ही गौतम ऋषि नदी में स्नान करने के लिए चले जाते थे।

इसके बाद करीब 2-3 घंटे बाद पूजा करने के बाद आते थे। इन्द्र आधी रात से ही कुटिया के बाहर छिपकर ऋषि के जाने की प्रतीक्षा करने लगे। इस दौरान इन्द्र की कामेच्छा उनपर इतनी हावी हो गई कि उन्हें एक और योजना सूझी। उन्होंने अपनी माया से ऐसा वातावरण बनाया जिसे देखकर ऐसा प्रतीत होता था कि सुबह हो गई हो। ये देखकर गौतम ऋषि कुटिया से बाहर चले गए। उनके जाने के कुछ समय बाद इन्द्र ने गौतम ऋषि का वेश बनाकर कुटिया में प्रवेश किया। उन्होंने आते ही कहा अहिल्या से प्रणय निवेदन किया.।

According to a legend described in the Padmapurana, Devraj Indra was surrounded by sex even after being surrounded by apsaras in Swargaloka. One day he was wandering on the earth. Then he saw that outside a hut, Goddess Ahilya, wife of Gautama Rishi, is busy with daily tasks. Ahalya was so beautiful and beautiful that Indra was fascinated to see her. In this way, Indra started coming out of the hut to see Goddess Ahilya daily. Gradually he came to know about the routine of Gautama Rishi. Indra figured out a way to get Ahalya's form. He planned to perform Kamkrida with Ahilya disguised as Gautam Rishi in the morning as Gautam Rishi used to go to bathe in the river before the sun rose. After this, they used to come after worshiping after about 2-3 hours. Indra hid outside the hut and waited for the sage to leave. During this time Indra's libido became so much dominated by him that he realized another plan. He created such an atmosphere with his illusion that it seemed that it was morning. Seeing this, Gautam Rishi walked out of the hut. Shortly after his departure, Indra entered the hut disguised as Gautam Rishi. As soon as he came, he said to Ahilya.

अपने पति द्वारा इस तरह के विचित्र व्यवहार को देखकर पहले तो देवी अहिल्या को शंका हुई लेकिन इन्द्र के छल-कपट से सराबोर मीठी बातों को सुनकर अहिल्या भी अपने पति के स्नेह में सबकुछ भूल बैठी। दूसरी तरफ नदी के पास जाने पर गौतम ऋषि ने आसपास का वातावरण देखा जिससे उन्हें अनुभव हुआ कि अभी भोर नहीं हुई है। वो किसी अनहोनी की कल्पना करके अपने घर पहुंचे। वहां जाकर उन्होंने देखा कि उनके वेश में कोई दूसरा पुरुष उनकी पत्नी के साथ रति क्रियाएं कर रहा है।

Goddess Ahilya was skeptical at first seeing such strange behavior by her husband, but after listening to the sweet talk of Indra's deceit, Ahilya too forgot everything in her husband's affection. On the other hand, near the river, Gautam Rishi saw the surrounding environment, which made him feel that it is not yet dawn. He arrived at his house after imagining something untoward. Going there, he saw that another man in his disguise was performing rituals with his wife.

ये देखते ही वो क्रोध से व्याकुल हो उठे। वहीं दूसरी ओर उनकी पत्नी ने जब अपने पति को अपने सामने खड़ा पाया तो उन्हें सारी बात समझ में आने लगी। अंजाने में किए गए अपराध को सोचकर उनका चेहरा पीला पड़ गया। इन्द्र भी भयभीत हो गए। क्रोध से भरकर गौतम ऋषि ने इन्द्र से कहा 'मूर्ख, तूने मेरी पत्नी का स्त्रीत्व भंग किया है। उसकी योनि को पाने की इच्छा मात्र के लिए तूने इतना बड़ा अपराध कर दिया। यदि तुझे स्त्री योनि को पाने की इतनी ही लालसा है तो मैं तुझे श्राप देता हूं कि अभी इसी समय तेरे पूरे शरीर पर हजार योनियां उत्पन्न हो जाएगी'।

On seeing this, he got distraught with anger. On the other hand, when his wife found her husband standing in front of him, he started to understand the whole thing. Thinking of the crime committed, he had a pale face. Indra also got frightened. Filled with anger, Gautam Rishi said to Indra, 'Fool, you have disturbed my wife's femininity.You committed such a big crime just for want of getting her vagina. If you have such a longing to get a woman's vagina, then I curse you that right now a thousand vagrants will be born on your whole body '.

कुछ ही पलों में श्राप का प्रभाव इन्द्र के शरीर पर पड़ने लगा और उनके पूरे शरीर पर स्त्री योनियां निकल आई। ये देखकर इन्द्र आत्मग्लानिता से भर उठे। उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर गौतम ऋषि से श्राप मुक्ति की प्रार्थना की। ऋषि ने इन्द्र पर दया करते हुए हजार योनियों को हजार आंखों में बदल दिया। वहीं दूसरी ओर अपनी पत्नी को शिला में बदल दिया। बाद में प्रभु श्रीराम ने उनका पैरों से स्पर्श कर उद्धार किया।

 

In a few moments the curse began to affect Indra's body and female vaginas came out on his entire body. On seeing this, Indra got filled with self-aggression. He folded his hands and prayed to Gautam Rishi for curse. The sage, taking pity on Indra, turned thousands of yonias into thousand eyes. On the other hand, he changed his wife to Shila Later Lord Prabhu touched them with feet.
इन्द्र को 'देवराज' की उपाधि देने के साथ ही उन्हें देवताओं का राजा भी माना जाता है लेकिन उनकी पूजा एक भगवान के तौर पर नहीं की जाती। इन्द्र द्वारा ऐसे ही अपराधों के कारण उन्हें दूसरे देवताओं की तुलना में ज्यादा आदर- सत्कार नहीं दिया जाता।

Besides giving the title of 'Devaraja' to Indra, he is also considered the king of the gods but he is not worshiped as a god. Due to such crimes by Indra, he is not given more respect than other gods.

भगवान राम के चरणों की कृपा से अहिल्या माता का उद्धार हुआ | अहिल्या माता ने कहा प्रभु आप मुझे देख के भी मेरा कल्याण कर सकते हैं किन्तु मेरे दोष देखे बिना ही मेरा उद्धार करें और अपने चरण कमलो की रज का स्पर्श प्रदान करें | ऐसा ही हुआ प्रभु के चरण रज से अहिल्या माता पत्थर से स्त्री रूप में बदल गयी और उनकी आँखों से प्रेमाश्रुओं की धारा बह चली | अहिल्या माता भगवान राम को बोली की संसार में जिसका कोई नहीं उसके तुम ही हो भगवान | निर्बल के बल राम  .. जय श्री राम  जय श्री राम 

Ahilya Mata was saved by the grace of Lord Rama's feet. Ahilya Mata said Lord, you can do my welfare even by looking at me, but without seeing my faults, save me and give me the touch of the rajas of your lotus feet. It happened like this that Ahilya Mata changed from stone to woman at the feet of the Lord and tears of love flowed from her eyes. Ahilya Mata said to Lord Rama that whoever has no one in the world, only you are God. Ram..  the strength of the weak
