अहल्या द्रौपदी तारा कुंती मंदोदरी तथा।
पंचकन्या: स्मरेतन्नित्यं महापातकनाशम्॥

 पंचकन्या वे पाँच कन्याएँ हैं, जिनका भारत के हिन्दू सम्प्रदाय और धर्मग्रंथों में विशिष्ट स्थान है। पुराणों के अनुसार ये पाँच कन्याएँ विवाहित होते हुए भी पूजा के योग्य मानी गई हैं।मंदोदरी पंचकन्याओं में से एक थी। मंदोदरी के पिता का नाम मयासुर था| मयासुर ने ही हनुमान जी के लंका दहन के बाद लंका का पुनरनिर्माण केवल तीन दिन में कर दिया था | मंदोदरी रावण की पटरानी तथा मेघनाद और अक्षयकुमार की माता थी | मंदोदरी बहुत पतिव्रता थीं तथा हमेशा रावण को समझाती रही कि सीता जी लंका तथा रावण का काल बनकर आयीं हैं कृपया उन्हें आदर के साथ प्रभु राम को लौटा दें किन्तु रावण ने कभी उसकी बात नहीं मानी तथा उपहास में ही उसको लिया | 

Panchakanya is the five girls who have a special place in the Hindu sect and scriptures of India. According to the Puranas, these five girls are considered worthy of worship even when they are married. Mandodari was one of the Panchkanis. Mandodari's father's name was Mayasur. It was Mayasur who reconstructed Lanka in just three days after the burning of Lanka by Hanuman. Mandodari was Patarani of Ravana and mother of Meghnad and Akshaykumar. Mandodari was very virtuous and always explained to Ravana that Sita ji has come as the era of Lanka and Ravana, please return her with respect to Lord Rama but Ravana never obeyed him and took him only in derision.

 

हिन्दू पुराणों में दर्ज एक कथा के अनुसार, एक बार मधुरा नामक एक अप्सरा कैलाश पर्वत पर पहुंची और देवी पार्वती को वहां ना पाकर वह भगवान शिव को आकर्षित करने का प्रयत्न करने लगी। तभी देवी पार्वती वहां पहुंचती हैं और क्रोध में आकर इस अप्सरा को श्राप देती हैं कि वह 12 साल तक मेढक बनकर कुएं में रहेगी। भगवान शिव के बार-बार कहने पर माता पार्वती ने मधुरा से कहा कि कठोर तप के बाद ही वह अपने असल स्वरूप में वापस आ सकती है। 

According to a legend recorded in the Hindu Puranas, once an apsara named Madhura reached Mount Kailash and tried not to find Goddess Parvati there, she started trying to attract Lord Shiva. Then Goddess Parvati reaches there and curses this nymph in anger that she will remain in the well as a paddock for 12 years. After repeatedly asking Lord Shiva, Mata Parvati told Madhura that only after rigorous penance can she return to her true form.                               

मधुरा लंबे समय तक कठोर तप करती है। इसी दौरान असुरों के देवता, मयासुर और उनकी अप्सरा पत्नी हेमा एक पुत्री की प्राप्ति के लिए तपस्या करते हैं। इसी बीच मधुरा की कठोर तपस्या से वह श्राप मुक्त हो जाती है। एक कुएं से मयासुर-हेमा को मधुरा की आवाज सुनाई देती है। मयासुर मधुरा को कुएं से बाहर निकालते हैं और उसे बेटी के रूप में गोद ले लेते हैं। मयासुर अपनी गोद ली पुत्री का नाम मंदोदरी रखते हैं। जिनसे रावण बाद में विवाह करता है।

 
Madhura performs prolonged rigorous penance. Meanwhile, the demon god, Mayasura and his nymph wife Hema perform penance for the attainment of a daughter. In the meantime, the curse of Madhura is severely curtailed. The sound of Madhura is heard to Mayasur-Hema from a well. Mayasura drives Madhura out of the well and adopts her as a daughter. Mayasur names his adopted daughter Mandodari. Whom Ravana later marries.

 

 

अशोक वाटिका में रावण ने क्रोध में जब चन्द्रहास खड्ग द्वारा सीता जी पर वार करना चाहा तो मंदोदरी ने ही रावण को रोक दिया और कहा की सीता को क्षमा कर दीजिये क्यूंकि इस समय यह लंका में आपकी अतिथि समान है | हनुमान जी के लंका को जला देने के पश्चात मंदोदरी ने अभिमानी रावण को चेताया की देखिये जिनके एक दूत ने आपकी सोने की लंका जला दी उनकी शक्ति का विचार करिये और युद्ध का निर्णय त्याग दीजिये किन्तु रावण कहाँ मानने वाला था। वह अभिमानी एक स्त्री की बाँतों को गंभीरता से कैसे लेता और अंततः भगवान् राम ने उसका कुल सहित नाश कर दिया | 

In Ashoka Vatika, when Ravana wanted to attack Sita ji by Chandrahas Khadg in anger, Mandodari stopped Ravana and said that forgive Sita because at this time it is your guest in Lanka. After Hanuman ji burnt Lanka, Mandodari warned the arrogant Ravana, look at the power of one of his messengers who burned your gold Lanka and abandon the decision of war, but where Ravana was going to believe. How would he take the arrogance of a proud woman seriously and eventually Lord Rama destroyed her clan as well.

रावण के वध के बाद मंदोदरी रणभूमि पर पहुंचती हैं। यहां पति-पुत्र के साथ-साथ अपनों के शव देखकर शोक में डूब जाती हैं। यहां श्रीराम उन्हें याद दिलाते हैं कि वे अब भी लंका की महारानी और अत्यंत बलशाली रावण की विधवा हैं। इसके बाद मंदोदरी लंका वापस लौट जाती हैं।एक किवदंती के अनुसार पति-पुत्र के दुख में मंदोदरी खुद को महल में कैद कर लेती हैं। वे पूरी तरह से बाहरी दुनिया से संपर्क तोड़ लेती हैं। इस दौरान विभीषण लंका का राजपाट संभालते हैं। कई सालों बाद मंदोदरी फिर से अपने महल से बाहर निकलती हैं और विभीषण से विवाह करने के लिए तैयार हो जाती हैं। विवाह के बाद मंदोदरी ने विभीषण के साथ मिलकर लंका के साम्राज्य को सही दिशा में आगे बढ़ाया।

After Ravana's slaughter, Mandodari arrives at the battlefield. Here the husband and son as well as their dead bodies are immersed in mourning. Here Shri Ram reminds her that she is still the Queen of Lanka and the widow of the extremely powerful Ravana. After this Mandodari returns to Lanka. According to a legend, Mandodari imprisons herself in the palace in the grief of husband and son. They completely cut off contact with the outside world. During this, Vibhishan takes over the reins of Lanka. Many years later Mandodari again exits her palace and agrees to marry Vibhishan. After marriage, Mandodari, along with Vibhishan, pushed the kingdom of Lanka in the right direction.
