अनसूया माता प्रजापति कर्दम और देवहूति की 9 कन्याओं में से एक तथा अत्रि मुनि की पत्नी थीं। उनकी पति-भक्ति अर्थात सतीत्व का तेज इतना अधिक था के उसके कारण आकाशमार्ग से जाते देवों को उसके प्रताप का अनुभव होता था। इसी कारण उन्हें 'सती अनसूया' भी कहा जाता है।

फिर परम शीलवती और विनम्र श्री सीताजी अनसूयाजी (आत्रिजी की पत्नी) के चरण पकड़कर उनसे मिलीं। ऋषि पत्नी के मन में बड़ा सुख हुआ। उन्होंने आशीष देकर सीताजी को पास बैठा लिया |
Then Param Sheelwati and the humble Shri Sitaji met Anasuya (wife of Atriji), holding her feet. There was great happiness in the mind of the sage wife. He seated Sitaji with blessings.
अनसूया ने राम, सीता और लक्ष्मण का अपने आश्रम में स्वागत किया था। उन्होंने सीता को उपदेश दिया था और उन्हें अखंड सौंदर्य की एक ओषधि भी दी थी। सतियों में उनकी गणना सबसे पहले होती है। कालिदास के 'शाकुंतलम्' में अनसूया नाम की शकुंतला की एक सखी भी कही गई है।

भगवान को अपने भक्तों का यश बढ़ाना होता है तो वे नाना प्रकार की लीलाएँ करते हैं। श्री लक्ष्मी जी, श्री सती जी और श्री सरस्वती जी को अपने पातिव्रत्य का बड़ा अभिमान था । तीनों देवियों के अंहकार को नष्ट करने के लिये भगवान ने नारद जी के मन में प्रेरणा की। फलत: वे श्री लक्ष्मी जी के पास पहुँचे। नारद जी को देखकर लक्ष्मी जी का मुख-कमल खिल उठा। लक्ष्मी जी ने कहा- 'आइये, नारद जी! आप तो बहुत दिनों बाद आये। कहिये, क्या हाल है?' नारद जी बोले-'माताजी! क्या बताऊँ, कुछ बताते नहीं बनता। अब की बार मैं घूमता हुआ चित्रकूट की ओर चला गया। वहाँ मैं महर्षि अत्रि ऋषि के आश्रम पर पहुँचा। माताजी! मैं तो महर्षि की पत्नी अनुसूया जी का दर्शन करके कृतार्थ हो गया। तीनों लोकों में उनके समान पतिव्रता और कोई नहीं है।' लक्ष्मी जी को यह बात बहुत बुरी लगी। उन्होंने पूछा-'नारद! क्या वह मुझसे भी बढ़कर पतिव्रता है?' नारद जी ने कहा-'माताजी!' आप ही नहीं, तीनों लोकों में कोई भी स्त्री सती अनुसूया की तुलना में किसी भी गिनती में नहीं है।' इसी प्रकार देवर्षि नारद ने सती और सरस्वती के पास जाकर उनके मन में भी सती अनुसूया के प्रति ईर्ष्या की अग्नि जला दी। अन्त में तीनों देवियों ने त्रिदेवों से हठ करके उन्हें सती अनुसूया के सतीत्व की परीक्षा लेने के लिये बाध्य कर दिया। विवाद ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश महर्षि अत्रि के आश्रम पर पहुँचे। तीनों देव मुनि वेष में थे। उस समय महर्षि अत्रि अपने आश्रम पर नहीं थे। अतिथि के रूप में आये हुए त्रिदेवों का सती अनुसूया ने स्वागत-सत्कार करना चाहा, किन्तु त्रिदेवों ने उसे अस्वीकार कर दिया।

Not only you, none of the women in all the three worlds is in any count compared to Sati Anusuya. ' Similarly, Devarshi Narada went to Sati and Saraswati and burnt the fire of jealousy for Sati Anusuya in his mind. In the end, the three goddesses stubbornly forced the trinity to take Sati Anusuya's sativa test. Controversy Brahma Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh Maharishi reached the ashram of Atri. सती अनुसूया ने उनसे पूछा- 'मुनियो! मुझसे कौन-सा ऐसा अपराध हो गया, जो आप लोग मेरे द्वारा की हुई पूजा को ग्रहण नहीं कर रहे हैं? मुनियों ने कहा- देवि! यदि आप बिना वस्त्र के हमारा आतिथ्य करें तो हम आपके यहाँ भिक्षा ग्रहण करेंगे।' यह सुनकर सती अनुसूया सोच में पड़ गयीं। उन्होंने ध्यान लगाकर देखा तो सारा रहस्य उनकी समझ में आ गया। वे बोलीं- 'मैं आप लोगों का विवस्त्र होकर आतिथ्य करूँगी। यदि मैं सच्ची पतिव्रता हूँ और मैंने कभी भी काम-भाव से किसी पर-पुरुष का चिन्तन नहीं किया हो तो आप तीनों छ:-छ: माह के बच्चे बन जाएँ।' पतिव्रता का इतना कहना था कि त्रिदेव छ:-छ: माह के बच्चे बन गये। माता अनुसूया ने विवस्त्र होकर उन्हें अपना स्तनपान कराया और उन्हें पालने में खेलने के लिये डाल दिया। इस प्रकार त्रिदेव माता अनुसूया के वात्सल्य प्रेम के बन्दी बन गये। इधर जब तीनों देवियों ने देखा कि हमारे पति तो आये ही नहीं तो वे चिन्तित हो गयीं। आख़िर तीनों अपने पतियों का पता लगाने के लिये चित्रकूट गयीं। संयोग से वहीं नारद जी से उनकी मुलाक़ात हो गयी। त्रिदेवियों ने उनसे अपने पतियों का पता पूछा। नारद ने कहा कि वे लोग तो आश्रम में बालक बनकर खेल रहे हैं। त्रिदेवियों ने अनुसूया जी से आश्रम में प्रवेश करने की आज्ञा माँगी। अनुसूया जी ने उनसे उनका परिचय पूछा। त्रिदेवियों ने कहा- 'माता जी! हम तो आपकी बहुएँ हैं। आप हमें क्षमा कर दें और हमारे पतियों को लौटा दें।' अनुसूया जी का हृदय द्रवित हो गया। उन्होंने बच्चों पर जल छिड़ककर उन्हें उनका पूर्व रूप प्रदान किया और अन्तत: उन त्रिदेवों की पूजा-स्तुति की। त्रिदेवों ने प्रसन्न होकर अपने-अपने अंशों से अनुसूया के यहाँ पुत्र रूप में प्रकट होने का वरदान दिया।

If you do our hospitality without clothes, we will take alms on you. ' Hearing this, Sati Anusuya fell into contemplation. When he looked carefully, the whole secret was understood by him. She said- 'I will do hospitality by disguising you. If I am a true husband and I have never thought carefully of any man, then all three of you should become children of six months. ' The husband had so much to say that Tridev became a child of six months. Mata Anusuya breastfed her breastlessly and put her to play in the cradle. In this way, Tridev became a prisoner of love for Mata Anusuya. Here, when the three ladies saw that our husbands had not come, they were worried. Finally all three went to Chitrakoot to find their husbands. Incidentally, he met Narada. The three goddesses asked them for the location of their husbands. Narada said that those people are playing as children in the ashram. The three gods asked Anusuya to enter the ashram. Anusuya Ji asked him to introduce him. The trinity said- 'Mother! We are your daughters-in-law. You forgive us and return our husbands. ' Anusuya's heart was moved. He sprinkled water on the children and gave them their former form and finally worshiped those trinity. The trinity pleased with their parts and gave a boon to Anusuya to appear as a son.

देवी अनुसुया और मुनि अत्रि से प्रसन्न और प्रभावित होने के बाद त्रिदेव ने उन्हें वरदान के तौर पर दत्तात्रेय रूपी पुत्र प्रदान किया, जो इन तीनों देवों का अवतार था।दत्तात्रेय का शरीर तो एक था लेकिन उनके तीन सिर और छ: भुजाएं थीं। विशेष रूप से दत्तात्रेय को विष्णु का अवतार माना जाता है।
दत्तात्रेय के अन्य दो भाई चंद्र देव और ऋषि दुर्वाशा थे। चंद्रमा को ब्रह्मा और ऋषि दुर्वाशा को शिव का रूप ही माना जाता है।
जिस दिन दत्तात्रेय का जन्म हुआ आज भी उस दिन को हिन्दू धर्म के लोग दत्तात्रेय जयंती के तौर पर मनाते हैं।
