कैसे करूँ वंदना तुम्हारी हे आदर्श भरत भाई | 

माँ सरस्वती भी तुम्हारी बुद्धि ना  फिरा पाई ||

भरत जी के जैसा भाई संसार में ना हुआ ना कभी होगा जिन्होंने एक अनन्य भक्त के रूप में अपने बड़े भाई श्री राम जी की सेवा करी |  राम कथा में भरत मिलाप वर्णन का विशेष स्थान है |भरत राजा दशरथ एवं केकई के पुत्र थे राम कथा में भरत प्रेम की परिभाषा है तथा भगवान् राम मर्यादा की | इंद्र आदि देवताओं के कहने पर मां सरस्वती ने मंथरा की बुद्धि फेर दी और मंथरा के बहकावे में केकई माता ने अपने प्रिय पुत्र राम को बनवास दिला दिया , किंतु जब भरत वन में जाकर अपने प्रभु राम जी को वापस लाने का विचार करने लगे तब देवताओं ने फिर से मां सरस्वती जी से विनती की कि भरत जी की बुद्धि भी फेर दें जिससे वह बन जा कर रामजी को वापस ना बुला लाएं ताकि उनके कार्य सिद्ध हो सके परन्तु मां सरस्वती जी ने साफ मना करते हुए कहा कि भरत जी का प्रेम टूट है उनकी भक्ति निष्कलंक  है उनकी बुद्धि हर लेने का साहस एवं ब्रह्मा, विष्णु व महेश में भी नहीं है क्यूंकि भगवान् राम अपना अहित सह सकते हैं किन्तु अपने भक्तो का नहीं और भरत जी तो उनको परमप्रिय हैं | भरत जी को विष्णु जी के सुदर्शन चक्र का अवतार माना जाता है उनकी पत्नी मांडवी थी  जिन्होंने कभी भातृ भक्ति में लीन भरत जी की सेवा में विघ्न नहीं डाला तथा सदा अपनी तीनों सास की सेवा करती रही भरत जी का भातृ प्रेम इतना अटूट था कि खुद प्रभु राम, गुरु वशिष्ठ व  राजा जनक भी उनके प्रेम और भक्ति की सराहना करते नहीं थकते थे | भरत जी ने करोड़ों प्रयत्न किए कि राम वापस अयोध्या लौट चलें किंतु जब राम जी ने कहा कि मैं तुम्हारे प्रेम के आगे विवश हूं तथा यज्ञ का राज्य स्वीकार करता हूं वह प्रसन्न हो गए लेकिन रामजी ने आगे कहा कि राज्य अभिषेक तो आज के 14 वर्ष काटने के बाद ही होगा ताकि पिता के वचनों का पालन हो सके तब भरत जी ने प्रतिज्ञा ही कर ली कि एक भी दिन आपने आने की देरी की तो वह चिता में भस्म हो जाएंगे और जब तक आप वापस नहीं आएंगे आप की चरण पादुका ही सिंहासन पर बैठेगी | अपने सर पर प्रभु राम की चरण पादुका लेकर वह वापस लौट आए किंतु एक भी क्षण के लिए प्रभु भक्ति से विमुख नहीं हुए | उन्होने तो अयोध्या नगरी के बाहर कुटिया में रहना शुरू कर दिया|  भरत जी मुनियों की तरह जीवन व्यतीत करने लगे और राजकाज भी संभालने लगे|  वह कंदमूल खाते थे तथा एक ही गड्ढे में 14 वर्ष तक कुशा के आसन पर सोए | भरत जी १४ वर्ष तक श्री राम जी के वनवास से भी कठिन व्रत का पालन करते रहे तथा जब तक उनके प्रभु राम 14 वर्ष के वनवास की अवधि पूरी कर के ना आए उन्होंने सदा उनकी याद में ही दिन व्यतीत किए |

Bharat ji continued to observe a difficult fast even after the exile of Shri Ram ji for 14 years and he always spent days in his memory until his lord Rama came to complete his 14 years of exile.
