रामायण एवं पुराणों के अनुसार कौशल्या जी कौशल देश के राजा भानुमंत की पुत्री थी | कौशल देश आज का छत्तीसगढ़ है तथा रायपुर से २५ किलोमीटर दूर चंद्रखुरी मैं ही कौशल्या जी का जनम हुआ | कालांतर में उनका विवाह अयोध्या के राजा दशरथ से हुआ |
According to Ramayana and Puranas, Kaushalya ji was the daughter of King Bhanumant of Kaushal. Kaushal Desh is today's Chhattisgarh and the birth of Kaushalya was in Chandrakhuri, 25 km from Raipur. Later, he was married to King Dasaratha of Ayodhya.
राजा दशरथ की तीन रानियां थी- कौशल्या, सुमित्रा एवं केकयी | माता कौशल्या राजा दशरथ की पहली पत्नी तथा श्री राम की माता थी | राजा की तीन रानियां थी पर तीनों ही रानियों का आपस में बहुत ही प्रेम था| कौशल्या माता एक आदर्श पत्नी एवं धर्मपरायण एवं ममतामयी माता थी | राम कथा में उनका चरित्र बहुत ही गंभीर करुणामई ममतामयी विशाल हृदया तथा पति सेवा परिणीता स्त्री के रूप में दर्शाया गया है |
King Dasharatha had three queens - Kaushalya, Sumitra and Kekayi. Mata Kaushalya was the first wife of King Dasharatha and the mother of Shri Rama. The king had three queens, but the three queens had a lot of love among themselves. Kaushalya Mata was an ideal wife and pious and Mamatamayi mother. In Ram Katha, her character is depicted as a very serious compassionate Mamatamayi huge heart and husband Seva Parineeta woman.
कौशल्या माता को जब पता चला कि उनके पुत्र राजाराम को राज्य अभिषेक होना निश्चित हुआ है, तब उन्होंने को बहुत दान-दक्षिणा वितरित की किंतु जब राम जी ने उन्हें बताया कि राजा दशरथ के वचनों का पालन करने के लिए राम जी को वन जाना होगा तो उन्होंने सांकेतिक शब्दों में राम जी को पिता के प्रति विद्रोह के लिए बोला कौशल्या जी ने कहा कि पिता कोई अनुचित आज्ञा दे तो माता की आज्ञा अनुसार पुत्र को पालन करना चाहिए | यदि माता-पिता दोनों की आज्ञा हो तो पुत्र को उनकी आज्ञा का पालन करना चाहिए और जब राम जी ने बताया कि केकयी माता ने भी 14 वर्ष के वनवास के वचन का अनुसरण करने को कहा है तब कौशल्या जी ने विशाल हृदय दिखाते हुए राम जी को वन जाने की आज्ञा दे दी | कौशल्या जी ने श्रीराम की पितृ भक्ति की भुरी भुरी सहाना की |
When Kausalya Mata came to know that her son Rajaram was certain to be anointed the kingdom, she distributed a lot of charity but when Rama told her that Rama would have to go to the forest to follow the words of King Dasaratha. So he cried out to Ram ji in rebellion against his father, Kaushalya said that if the father gives any inappropriate orders, the son should obey the mother's orders. If both parents are commanded, then the son should obey them and when Ram ji told that Kekayi Mata also asked to follow the promise of 14 years of exile, then Kaushalya ji showed great heart Ram ji Gave permission to go to the forest. Kaushalya ji endured Shriram's paternal devotion.
उनके जीवन चरित्र मै दर्शाया गया है की पति की अकस्मात् मृत्यु तथा राम जी के वन जाने के पश्चात् वे जीवनभर दुखी रहती हैं | उनके वास्तविक अधिकार से वंचित होकर उनका जीवन दुखदायी और दयनीय हो जाता है | | राजा दशरथ को यूं तो तीनों रानियों में केकयी सबसे अधिक आकर्षित करती थी किंतु राजा दशरथ ने अपना अंतिम समय कौशल्या जी के कक्ष में ही बिताया तथा उन्ही को अपनी सेवा का अवसर प्रदान किया | धर्म का पालन करने वाली माता कौशल्या ने कभी भी राम और भरत में भेद नहीं किया जब राजा भरत ने उनसे विनती करी की राम जी को आदेश दिए कि वे राजा बने और अयोध्या लौट चलें तो उन्होंने कहा कि माता क्या करें जब दोनों पुत्र ही माता को सौगंध देने लगें - राम जी भी तो तुम्हारी तरह से विनती करेंगे कि भरत को राजा बनने की आज्ञा दें ताकि पिता के वचनों का पालन हो तब क्या करेंगे | इन प्रसंगो से पता चलता है कि माता कौशल्या बुद्धिमता और ममता दोनों की परिकाष्ठा को पार कर चुकी थी|
Her life character has shown that after the sudden death of her husband and Ram ji's going to the forest, she remains unhappy throughout her life. Deprived of their real rights, their lives become painful and miserable. | While King Dasaratha was the most attracted of the three queens, King Dasaratha spent his last time in Kaushalya's room and gave him an opportunity to serve him. Mata Kaushalya, who practiced religion, never made any distinction between Rama and Bharata. When King Bharat begged him to order Rama to become king and return to Ayodhya, he asked what to do when both sons are the mother. To give Saugandh - Ram ji will also request you to order Bharat to become king so that what will be done when father's words are followed. These episodes show that Mata Kaushalya had passed the test of wisdom and Mamta.

माता कौशल्या जी के दिन रात राम जी के वनवास की अवधि को पूरा होने की बाट जोहते ही बीते | जब राम जी अयोध्या लोटे तो प्रेमाश्रुओं से उनका तन मन आत्मविभोर हो उठा और श्री सीताराम को उन्होने ह्रुदय से लगा लिया | एक रोचक प्रसंग भी उनके साथ जुड़ा हुआ है जिसका वर्णन आनंद रामायण में मिलता है :-
On the day of Mata Kaushalya, the night of Ram ji's exile was completed. When Ram ji returned to Ayodhya, his body of mind became self-possessed by the lovers and he took Shri Sitaram with his heart. An interesting episode is also associated with him, which is described in Anand Ramayana: -
रावण को जब पता चला की कौशल प्रदेश की राजकुमारी कौशल्या से जो उत्पन्न होगा वही उसका काल होगा और उनका विवाह भी अयोध्या के राजा दशरथ से निश्चित हो चूका है | रावण ने तुरंत कौशल देश पर आक्रमण कर दिया और राजा अज तब रास्ते में ही थे उन पर भी हमला बोल दिया | विशाल राक्षसी सेना ने दोनों राजाओ को परास्त किया तब उसने कौशल्या जी का अपरहण करके उन्हें एक पेटी में बंद कर दिया और महामतस्य के मुख मैं छिपा दिया | संयोगवश एक दूसरे मतस्य के आक्रमण के कारण महामतस्य ने वह पेटिका जिसमे कौशल्या जी बंद थी को गंगा किनारे रख दिया | राजा दशरथ भी वही देव प्रेरणा से युद्ध में बहते हुए वही पहुंच गए तथा उस पेटिका से निकली देवी कौशल्या से विवाह कर लिया |
When Ravana came to know that the skills that would arise from Kaushalya, the princess of the state, would be his period and his marriage was also confirmed to King Dasaratha of Ayodhya. Ravana immediately attacked Kaushal country and King Aja was on the way and attacked him too. The huge demonic army defeated both the kings, then he killed Kaushalya and locked them in a box and hid in the face of Mahamatasya. Incidentally, due to the attack of another opinion, Mahamatasya put the box in which Kaushalya ji was closed, on the banks of the Ganges. King Dasharatha too reached the same place with the same God inspiration while flowing in the war and married Goddess Kaushalya who came out of that box.
